| - Dining highlight of our trip to Montreal, and one of the best dinners I've had in a very, very long time. Au Pied de Cochon (or APDC as so many fondly term it) is truly amazing and a must-visit for any true foodie. Reservations are hard to come by, but I managed to snag a 9:30 pm Friday night reservation calling a few days before. Also, we were in the area and stopped by at 8:30 pm with low expectations of being seated early... but the host graciously sat us within 10 minutes! Great start to a great evening.
The restaurant is lively and bustling, and actually quite a bit more casual than I anticipated. Lovely to have fantastic food without a stuffy ambiance. It's a wonderfully cheery place, warmed by the alluring smell of French cooking wafting throughout the restaurant. Waiters were friendly and eager to give recommendations.
The Foodnalysis:
- Foie Gras Cromesquis - Absolutely delicious. These truffle-sized treats are eaten in one bite. The fried, crispy exterior gives way to a savory burst of liquid... really amazing and unique.
- Bison Tongue - Tender, delicious. Don't let the word 'tongue' scare you off from this fantastic appetizer.
- Duck in a Can - Flavorful, filling, fatty, fantastic... and many other "f" adjectives. Their signature dish, the Duck in a Can, is a breast and foie gras paired and hosts of other great tasting items sealed in a can then boiled to perfection. The waiter literally brings out a can and opens it, pouring out the rich, steaming contents before your very eyes. It's great and unique, definitely a must-try.
- Foie Gras Poutine - As an American (and an Asian one at that), poutine is not something my taste buds are accustomed to. But Foie Gras Poutine was my best attempt at being French Canadian during this meal! Very rich, and a little much considering I shared some of the Duck in a Can.
- Oven Baked Apple - Sweet, but not overly sugarly. Baked just the right amount of time to achieve that perfect, soft texture. A nice end to a rich meal.
The Bottom Line:
The perfect Montreal dinner spot with amazing food. Make an early reservation and try the Foie Gras Comesquis, Bison Tongue and Duck in a Can for a truly unique dining experience!
