I first laid eyes on Otro Cafe and mistakenly dismissed it. I KNOW the best places are unassuming and I KNOW not to judge a book by its cover but sometimes I just can't help it. Parking was no problem, and when I got inside I was shocked at how cute it was! The hostesses were super friendly and walked me to my friend's table. We started out with The Maryland and the Oaxaca Old Fashioned to drink. The drinks are made with fresh squeezed juice so be prepared to wait a little for them. The Maryland was light and refreshing, the Old Fashioned was totally different than a traditional recipe. The mezcal giving a more exotic smokiness.
For appetizers, we opted for the Queso Fundido with veggies and chorizo as well as the guacamole. The guacamole was tasty, very lime-y (which I like!) but could have used a little more flavor, good nonetheless. The queso was awesome, but honesty I am addicted to cheese (preferably melted and served with warm carbs) so I could just be easy to please. The chorizo was a great addition but the veggies didn't add much so I'd probably skip those next time. We decided tacos were a must, so I ordered the grilled shrimp taco and the pork belly taco. I loved how the tacos were so simple, not a ton of extra crap on them to distract from the main flavor. There was plenty of grilled shrimp and it was cooked perfectly. The pork belly was just the tiniest bit dry on the ends but otherwise awesome. I would get both again!
Service was good- she wasn't super friendly and outgoing but she did her job well. No complaints there. I liked how she explained about the drinks taking a bit longer because of the preparation involved.
Overall- just a few small things were off about the food, or maybe I'm just being nitpicky. Either way don't gloss over this place like I did and check it out!
