| - In The Great Recession, expensive restaurants almost seem anachronistic. The ones that have been able to thrive through it all have done so for a reason, and that reason is that they provide something that is worth paying for. Kincaid's does just that.
I'm not usually one for fancy dinners. A mustache like mine is hard to dress up. But I do enjoy the occasional attempt to join the wealthy, and this is just the place to do it. Kincaid's makes the dining experience worth every penny with their food and drink both being top-notch.
The bar area is set apart from the dining area with a wide lobby area dividing them. This is a welcome departure from restaurants that set them closer together, as the two areas really do serve different function. The bar is packed with Suns fans during basketball season (well, at least when the Suns are doing well!) and the atmosphere is fun, lively, and loud during games. Drinks are pricey but delicious. The service during busy periods can take a while, but in this restaurant good things do come to those who wait.
The restaurant area itself is great for groups. Take your clients here and wow them. Take your family here and make them think you won the lottery. Take your wife here and for heaven's sake don't show her the bill unless you wish to sleep on the couch.
The seating is comfortable inside, it never seems like you're sitting right on top of another group. Outdoor seating is wonderful 9 months a year, the downtown ambience is a welcome departure from the normal suburban restaurant experience.
And the food? Killer. Order yourself a filet and be happy. Order yourself the aged prime rib and find heaven. Order yourself the fish and get the best stuff you can get in a landlocked state. If you can't decide, they have a "sampler" type order which offers you cuts of steak, potatoes, seafood, and bread. All are delicious.
The drinks here are classy and well-made. Of special note is their classic lavender cosmopolitan. It arrives at your table in a note of deep purple, and tastes like cotton candy. Gentlemen, this isn't the most manly of drinks, but after your third one you won't care. And with the light-rail stop only a block away, you're good to take the train home!
A special note for our plant-eating friends...the menu is hard for a vegetarian to navigate. While they do have vegetarian options, they are few and far between. Kincaids' specialty is fish and meat, as evidenced by them referring to themselves as a "fish and chop house." You'll find options that will satisfy you, but part of the experience here is enjoying the meat that is their specialty. And you are paying for that experience.
Reservations are recommended for large parties or during busy times. Wait times on game nights or when there are events going on nearby can be prohibitive. While there is no real dress code, you're going to stand out like a sore thumb if you were a tank top and shorts. Don't be that guy.
This is a perfect place to take your date before or after the symphony, or to enjoy fine food on the patio on a cool spring evening. It's a bit too expensive to be a regular haunt, but for a special occasion, you can't do any better than this.
