| - I'm pretty lukewarm about The Green Owl, honestly. And given my borderline veganness, it surprises some people when I tell them that. While I have to give it some credit for being the only 100% vegetarian restaurant in the area (That i'm aware of. Someone should holla at me if there's another), I overall have been to places that do vegetarian/vegan much better than The Green Owl in other cities.
When it comes to strengths, i'll tell you now that The Green Owl has very good desserts, including a vegan cheesecake that was delicious. It was good enough to motivate me to create my own, although that was a failure =/. I'll also say that the menu has a good variety going, so you can satisfy a wide span of cravings there including Mexican, Asian, or traditional American food. This makes Green Owl a pretty safe bet place to go to in certain situations.
On the other hand, I feel like Green Owl has a lot of room for improvement. First off, I'm usually disappointed with the size of the portions I receive. It's usually too small, and sometimes after eating an entree I feel like I could easily down another one, which is not how I should feel after a meal is over. Another critique I have is with the decor and furniture they use in the restaurant. It overall feels very kiddy, and somewhat tacky. I particularly am not a fan of the green chairs. The decor overall makes me feel like i'm in a space for children, which I personally do not enjoy much.
Finally, while I would say that most of the food i've had here is pretty good, it doesn't stack up compared to some of the other vegan gems i've had, like Soul Vegetarian, Native Foods, or Chicago Diner, all in Chicago. One example that springs to mind is comparing the nachos at Green Owl to the nachos at Native Foods. Native Foods nachos are just LOADED, and have very tasty substitute meats and cheeses. Green Owl just doesn't do it as great, and I think that they're both the same price too. A good start toward upping the ante for Green Owl would be completely ditching the Daiya cheese in favor of a nut based substitute. Even if it's more expensive, it would be worth it to be more tasty and healthy.
Overall, I would say that I like The Green Owl, but i'm a ways from loving it. I know that they have been tinkering with the menus lately, so hopefully with some more adjustments, they can turn into a place that I love.
