This is my second trip to Aveda. My first experience was amazing. This time around I am not as impressed. Best thing I can say is that I only paid $18 and I normally pay $60 at my usual place back home.
My Joan Jett hair has been getting heavy with layers starting to get too long. I decided to come back because I had such a great time last visit. I wanted an advanced grad stylist or instructor, but they only had institute students available. I went for it, a little worried. I still gave it a chance anyway out of desperation.
I had my hair cut by a student that had only been in school for 3 months. She had only done a couple hair cuts before me. I showed her tons of pictures of Joan Jett and of me when my hair was at its best. I only wanted an inch cut off, the layers fixed, and bulk removed. I told her what my usual hair stylist does, so I thought it would be clear.
The cut took 3 hours. This was no issue for me because I told the student to take as long as she needed. I understand that she was still learning and I wanted her to feel comfortable and confident. She was a very nice girl and great to talk with as she worked away.
I am disappointed with the end result unfortunately. Despite my student hairstylist's effort, I did not get what I wanted with my hair. She cut off probably 2-3 inches more than I wanted and she didn't style it how I had asked. I did notice that it looked like she was cutting a lot off, but I figured maybe she was doing a certain technique with the layers. My best advice: Don't be afraid to ask them what they are doing and to tell them to stop. I went in not wanting to be a back seat-stylist, but I should've said something when I felt like things were off.
My hair is still Joan Jett-like for the most part, however the layering seems a little different. I don't blame the student entirely. She was just doing what her instructor told her to do. I'm not even sure if the instructor did a thorough job inspecting what she had done each time she came over. I think that the students need more supervision.
