  • Cornish Pasty and The Whining Pig are two wildly popular valley establishments that are certainly worthy of the public affection they receive. Both offer a great selection of drinks and a comfortable casual atmosphere to match. So what would you get if you tried a mashup of the two? While that question is certainly open for debate, Gwin (a Cornish word for Wine, FYI) would seem to be the best answer I've found thusfar. Allow me to elaborate. You'll find Gwin on Shea just east of Scottsdale Road just a stones throw from the Harkins Shea 14 Theatre. Occupying a relatively small space that once housed a consignment store, Gwin is a small but classy neighborhood establishment marrying the chalkboards and round bar setup of The Whining Pig with the dark lighting and some of Cornish Pasty's very own pasties. Alex Manuel, his wife Alexandra, Rishi Patel and Sean Babin are the proprietors of this unique setup. Full disclosure, I was a college classmate of Rishi's so that was partly what brought me in on a Saturday during Happy Hour. The space includes a U-shaped bar setup with seating for about 30 as well as a few small high tables near the entrance. While there's maybe 40 seats altogether, there's plenty of space to stand and wander or move about the room and socialize. Plenty of seating available at the bar when I arrived and Gwin honors the Yelp check in for 25% off your first glass of beer or wine. I went with a local brew on draft, Wren House's Kolsch. But as with all establishments, I'm usually more curious about the food than anything else. And Gwin's menu had two items in particular that I found quite intriguing. While the menu is mostly small bites (and of course the Cornish Pasty items), I went big with Gwin's Charcuterie Board. A variety of cheeses, fruits, nuts, bread, and even slices of meats from Schriener's Sausage Company in Phoenix. Perfect for sharing with a group (or if you're a super hungry guy who skimmed on lunch earlier in the day as I did). I also took a stab at Gwin's Dessert Flight. The flight includes as follows: A chocolate brownie, ice cream drenched in extra virgin olive oil, a berry sorbet mixed with rose wine, and a shot glass of red zinfandel. This was a very pleasant surprise, especially the EVOO/ice cream combo (strange, but true). Total cost for the beer, food, tax, and tip came to about $40. FYI, the Charcuterie board is basically the most expensive food item on the menu at $20 so take my spending here with a grain of salt. Most of the bites here will run you around $10 or less. The beer and wine selection rotate regularly so be sure to check their website for the latest list of drafts and bottles. All in all, a pretty cool place. A neat spot to grab a quick bite and drink or just spend an evening socializing with friends and the bar staff. That's what I call Gwinning (I'm so sorry, I'll see myself out now).
