rev:text	I was in Vegas for a conference and made the trip up Frenchman Mountain on the afternoon of Jan. 24, 2016. In retrospect, while I was well-equipped and enjoyed the trek, there are a number of things I would have done differently. I had Uber drop me off about a mile or so outside of North Las Vegas, and I then had to walk about two miles to the mountain's trailhead. Even though it was January, it was still quite warm, and I knew from other reviews to bring a lot of water. I needed it. I also brought layers in case I ran into inclement weather, and I ended up needing a light jacket for my descent. I wore Vasque Mantra 2.0 hiking shoes, and even though they're pretty heavy duty, they navigated the loose rocks on the challenging trail very well. It was a beautiful day and the sights were great, though I would have enjoyed them more had I left earlier in the day. I passed a couple about half way up that reported seeing a pack of coyotes in the desert from the mountain's false peak. It was at that time that I was glad that I had thought to bring a handgun (a Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm, which I carried in a Hill People Gear Kit Bag on my chest). From the reviews that I read, I expected to reach the peak to see other people there to watch the sunset as I was. I was mistaken, and though the view was great, the trip back down the mountain alone was harrowing. Though I had a small flashlight, I consider myself very lucky to have made the solitary trip back down the mountain in the dark. I would recommend to anyone considering this to start earlier in the day so that you can take your time and take in the views to get the most out of this excursion.
