  • There is no enough space on yelp to describe the poor experience I had with this dental business. First the positives: It's a clean, visually appealing office. The dentist is very charismatic and is clearly a business professional. The tooth cleaning was totally fine. That's about where the positives end. I was told by this dentist upon my recent visit that I had an extreme number of cavities, about 8-10, which is far more than the last time I went to the dentist, when I was told I had 2 small ones. But perhaps I erupted with new cavities. It's certainly possible. Designs in Dentistry recommended crowns and possible root canals for two teeth, neither of which were giving me any problems at all. I had insurance, and upon learning this information, got three of the small cavities filled on-site, and wanted to think about next steps for the two large 'problem teeth.' Getting those three small cavities filled was a huge mistake. When filling these teeth, the dentist joked about how she'd done SO MANY fillings today, she hoped she did not have to do any more. Apparently, she couldn't even handle mine. When numbing the teeth, the needle went to deep and the local anesthetic entered the parotid salivary gland, which numbed me all the way up to my eye and eyebrow. She knew this, and mentioned that I must be feeling it in my eyelid, but instead of informing me that this was a blip, she acted as though this was what she had intended. It's business, I suppose, but it's also deception. I googled it later, since it felt like a facial nerve block, and because this sort of thing had never happened at the dentist before. Accidents happen, I guess. But it gets much worse. The dentist at Designs in Dentistry was very quick with my three fillings, and left two large food traps, one of which was obscenely huge. I called the office a few days later because I wanted to discuss how to fix the food trap, which was already causing extreme pain and inflammation, and also asked what to do about the pain in between my other teeth, and the pain at the tip of my tooth that was, post-filling- now occurring when I bite down. I went back in to have the food trap 'fixed,' and left with, you guessed it, a slightly smaller, still very large food trap, and the tooth in question had been sharpened into a point, part of the original tooth was gone and not built-up or replaced, which aesthetically, looks TERRIBLE, as though, well, someone filed it down at a very sharp, odd angle. The pain when biting down is still present. My teeth felt great before I went to Designs in Dentistry for what I thought was a routine cleaning only, and now, weeks later, one still hurts every time I bite down, and the fillings still hurt every time I floss between them, weeks later. What a nightmare. At this point, I want nothing to do with the office. I've learned that if you give a business a second chance, and they still can't fix the issue, it's best to move on. I'll have to pay a ton out-of-pocket to try to fix the fillings that they botched at some point in the future. It's awful. I went to a different practice with an endodontist on-site for the two larger 'problem teeth' that Designs in Dentistry wanted to work on. The practice with the endodontist told me that there was absolutely nothing wrong with one of the two, there was no cavity, and it needed no work. But Designs in Dentistry was ready to drill, fill, and crown it, if I'd just given the word. It's rather terrifying. (The other office did a great job with the one problem tooth, and I'm glad I found a dentist that does good work in the Pittsburgh area.) I would not ever recommend Designs in Dentistry to anyone. I read some negative reviews before making the appointment, but couldn't imagine it could be this bad, especially since I thought I was just going in for a cleaning. It is that bad. It really is. Perhaps a larger problem is that there's just not as much oversight into dental offices as there is with other medical practices. I don't know...
