  • Jabz is the best. The trainers are all really nice, but they push you or call you out if you are slacking. They're super inspiring as they are all really strong and fit! I was a little bit wary as I had done boxing and Tae Kwon Do as a kid, but I knew going to Jabz was going to be different - for one, it's NOT a self-defense class. They do NOT enforce correct form. It's ALL about cardio and getting your heart rate up, with a mix of HIIT exercises, light weights, and body weight. You do NOT need to have any martial arts background to get the weight loss benefits of Jabz. Here's a run down of how it works: 16 circuits, with in-between exercises. You warm up by yourself for the first 7 minutes, which means you can stretch, use the rowing machines, shadow box with the dummies, use their dumbbells, etc. Anything you want. Then, the instructor of the day demonstrates each station's workout, plus the "in-between" HIIT exercise. 99% of the time there will be a modification demonstrated, in case your fitness isn't on par yet - DON'T WORRY! After the demo, you choose a station and begin. I went for 3-4 months and lost 8 lbs going 3-5x per week. Honestly, the first two weeks I was sooo out of shape. I could barely do an unassisted push-up. By the third week, I slowly realized my cardio had already improved - I was less out of breathe. By the 5th or 6th week, I realized that my push-ups were getting better and that I was already stronger. It's seriously encouraging once you start to see improvements, and part of the fun is competing with yourself. Don't worry about "looking silly" or whatever - I promise everyone is seriously focused on their own workouts! (Also, if you've ever taken a class with me, you will see that I almost always forget how to do one or two workouts, and need the instructor to come demo it for me AGAIN, lmao. Yes, I must have a short attention span. Even after going for 3+ months, I would totally blank out and forget how to do something. LOL.) Go to Jabz if: 1. You want a CLEAN, well-maintained all-women gym. 2. You need help or motivation for adhering to a gym schedule. 3. You're interested in HIIT or bodyweight exercises. 4. You aren't looking for a SELF-DEFENSE class. 5. You like using an app that helps you book classes, pay, AND automatically schedule it in your calendar. And yes - you can stick to using LIGHT dumb bells for all the exercises - but I promise if you keep going consistently, after a few weeks you'll realize it gets easier and easier. And you will WANT to push yourself to start lifting heavier. Sadly, I had to stop my membership as I took an extended leave from Arizona for a few months, but I'm moving back to Tempe in the spring and I 100% plan on restarting my membership.
