| - Let me start by saying, I don't enjoy writing negative reviews. I get no validation from complaining, and tend to be too nice- but I'm hoping someone will read this (and the many other negatives) so they can make an informed decision.
I started coming to Habit about 5 years ago, having followed a stylist from her previous location because I loved her to bits! She always nailed it, and if she didn't, she'd be the first to say so and offer to correct it for no charge. I think this happened maybe twice in all these years. She always gave me what I wanted, and this is why I'd drive an hour to Habit just to see her. Her prices were totally reasonable, and when she started working for the salon she had to comply with their pricing, which was much more expensive. The last time I came here (about one year ago), I paid $150 before tip for updated sombre color, a new, richer base color and a trim. In short, she colored all of my hair in some capacity.
Since our schedules no longer are compatible, I sadly wasn't able to schedule with her this time around. In desperation of being fed up with my overgrown hair, I thought, I'll just try someone else at the same salon. (General rule of thumb here and elsewhere in life- don't make expensive decisions based on desperation.)
I went in with a good attitude and was hopeful about this new person. I'm not going to use her name, because I think they've become such a scene that all the stylists adhere to the same, specific look anyway. I actually heard one stylist correct another because she wasn't "doing it 'the Habit way'." Yikes. If you want ashy blonde or ashy brown, and are cool with spending upwards of $250, maybe you'll be fine here. But I can't confidently tell you that you'll get what you want (or pay for).
I had a couple photos (different angles of the same persons hair) to show my stylist, in efforts to simplify things because I didn't know her. I am a natural brunette and wanted more warm, caramel brown and warm gold sombre. She proceeded to counter my photo with one of her own, which was different and all much cooler tones than anything I was asking for. I expressed this to her, and she said she loved doing warm, caramelly brunettes. I also said no to bright white blonde pieces and she repeated it back to me. It seemed we were on the same page. It seemed.
She had a girl in training help with my color, toning and shampooing, and this girl was really sweet and used the colors that my stylist had mixed up for me, so I don't blame her for anything. It is a little disconcerting overhearing that someone is learning how to do things for the first time on your hair, but I stayed positive. Everyone has to start somewhere.
At one point when my stylist was applying toner, she was talking to another stylist about a certain toner that is green, and she doesn't know what it's really for or why anyone uses it, besides color correction. However, she was using THIS TONER ON MY HAIR. I didn't ask for or need any such correction on my hair. She laughed to the other stylist and said she didn't know why she was using it, she just felt like it. I should have spoken up, but frankly I was speechless. I sat there with said toner on my hair for at least 10-15 minutes. There were numerous instances where I was just sitting there waiting as she worked on other clients.
As she was beginning to dry, I notice that there were blonde pieces all the way up to my roots. NOPE. She proceeded to put on more toner to fix it. Eventually, she dried my hair and cut it, which took 10 minutes, maybe. By the time it was done and I went to pay, I had been there for 4.5 hours. It was dark out, so I didn't get to evaluate the color in daylight, and I was so over this whole day that I just wanted to get out of there.
I go to pay, and am told it will be $250. That's $100 more than I paid last year (when I was given what I asked for). I commented and the receptionist got permission to lower it to $200. They didn't have me in their system because I had always booked directly with my old stylist, so they assumed I was a first timer they could massively overcharge. The sweet receptionist nervously laughed and basically admitted that they raise the prices for new customers (that don't know any better). I tipped 20% because that's my M.O, but I regret it now.
The next morning I looked at my hair, and it could not be further from what I asked for. And, to no surprise, all sections of my hair have a greenish, ashy cast! Thanks, weird green toner that I didn't need. My skin has pink undertones so this color looks completely unnatural on me, in addition to being exactly what I said I DID NOT WANT. No caramel, warm browns to be found, and my natural brunette base is screwed up, too. Surely I have every right to have it fixed for what I paid, but I was so put off by the entire experience that I don't want to ever set foot in or give my money to Habit Beauty Salon again.
