I have no idea what's up with reviews here. It's an American Chinese restaurant and for most dishes it's better than New China King across the street, which somehow has a 4/5 average here (New China King's meat quality is AWFUL. Deep fried chicken for kung pao chicken? Cha siu for every single pork dish?).
I was happy to see Moo Shu Pork on the menu as many places in Lakewood don't have it. I ordered it with beef (Moo Shu Beef) and it was better than expected - much better flavor than the same dish at Jackie Chen Dragon Tower (another 4/5 average here) and the portion was huge (though there wasn't a ton of meat). The beef was good quality and you could tell the veggies were fresh. They gave me five large pancakes and I easily filled all five. Pretty good for $9. They also gave a bag of oolong tea in the bag which I enjoyed.
No, it's not in the same league as any of the places in Asia Town but it's definitely a better spot than many of numerous Chinese restaurants in the area and a good restaurant in the "Chinese American" genre. I wouldn't let the Yelp reviews put you off from this place - I did and I was missing out! This place has great reviews on Google which is what made me try this place and if you want some basic comfort food, give it a try.
I suppose it's possible over the past couple of years they served some food that wasn't up to their name - there was apparently family drama (same family running this place since 1981!) and it was briefly up for sale. But since a couple of weeks ago, after a lot of consideration, it's no longer up for sale and is staying in the family so I'm sure you can expect good stuff from here on out.
