| - My husband and I are avid movie-goers.
Being new to the area we decided to give Savoy 16 a try (mostly based on the Yelp! reviews, but also because neither of us had ever been to a Goodrich theater).
I downloaded the GQT app and purchased our tickets. Free small popcorn when you download the app!
Upon pulling into the parking lot at Noon, we noticed masses and masses of kids walking out. I told my husband that a free movie must have played. Sure enough we get to the concession stand and realize that free movies are offered at 10am on Saturdays and Sundays.
Note: movie is free if you have the rewards card. You can also bring up to 6 guests using 1 rewards card. Talk about generous. I'm sure this is a first-come first served kind of program and they appear to reach capacity. Pro: the theater is doing its part to give back to the community. Many kids may not get that movie theater experience if it weren't for the free movie weekends.
Initial impression is that this theater is much more run down than AMC 13 Champaign (formerly Carmike). I feel this way in regards to the lobby, not so much the individual theaters themselves.
We bought our Combo #3---large popcorn and large drink. Hubs asked if he could get an Icee with the Combo, but the cashier explained there was an upcharge. He got the soda. Popcorn refills were $.50 so we didn't get any. 2/5 stars for the popcorn. It tasted pretty stale at 12:15pm. Maybe this is because the door to the machine is left open? Pro: concession stands are separate from the ticket sales lines. Pro: concession prices are cheaper than AMC.
Had my QR code pulled up on my phone to show the ticket taker. Dummy me assumed she had a scanner that would check us in. When we got to her she explained that we still had to print our tickets at one of the self-serve kiosks. I don't quite understand this.

There were maybe 20 people in the whole theater, all of whom sat down after my husband and I. I'm certain the woman in the group directly behind us was suffering from some sort of medical condition. This 'condition' caused her to gasp, sigh, "awe" and "oh, no!!!" every single time a scene evoked even the tiniest emotional response---which was A LOT. Accepting whatever this person was dealing with, my husband and I weren't about to shh! her or get angry. Moving wouldn't have eliminated the issue, either.
Once the nearly 2 hour experience was over my husband felt compelled to turn around and check out who had been sitting behind us. He believes the woman in question was under the influence of something...Or maybe they were just bigger Wes Anderson fans than we are? :-P
We left the movie bummed, feeling like we missed a good portion of the dialogue. Our first experience at Savoy 16 was pretty tainted.
Even if it hadn't been for the guests behind us, we much prefer AMC. They're rewards program is pretty generous, free refills on large popcorn, competitively priced, clean theaters and their app seems to be more useful.
Goodrich Pros: classic movies on Wednesday & Sunday. Think Grease, Back to the Future, Monty Python & the Holy Grail, etc.
We'll probably give Savoy 16 another try, but it'll be awhile.
