| - For whatever reason, my fiancé always insists on going to Montreál when it's cold AF. Part of it is because it's to celebrate our March anniversary. Part of that is because he can find baller deals on Priceline. Either way, because of his persistence, I not only find myself with a new pair of stylish snow boots, but also having stayed at some of the best hotels the city has to offer, for a very nominal price.
One thing's for sure--the service at the Sofitel is exceptional. However, of course, everything comes at a price, and people do expect tips. When we arrived, we had quite an amount of random baggage, so we needed a cart. I would have been perfectly happy to take the cart up to my room by myself, but before I could grab it, a bellhop had literally taken it away from me, headed to a service elevator, and said he'd meet me at my room. Tip! Another tip to the guy who didn't ask but just began removing bags from our car. Okay! And a very large tip to the concierge who made dinner reservations for us during what is apparently a time where all the restaurants have festival specials (we were there during Montreál en Lumiere). Our room, while nicely decorated, almost made me cry when I arrived. Imagine: I had already worked a full day, then took four hours to drive to Montreál (which, I HATE road trips), hadn't eaten since lunch, and was exhausted. And I go to the end of the hall, open the door, and........the size was something I'd have thought for a Microtel. Not a Sofitel. Literally, there was barely enough space for the king-sized bed and a chair. It was SO tight that when we ordered room service--on three occasions--it was too tight for the cart to be wheeled across the room. I get it, we're being punished for using Priceline, but that's just harsh. Also, the fridge is actually a minibar, so if you are like me and normally USE the fridge in the hotels, do yourself a favor and bring a rolling cooler with you or something.
But, I guess, enough for my gripes. Once I slept and had some food, I was a bit less grumpy. One entire wall of our small room was windows, floor to ceiling, and we did have a pretty great view from the 14th floor of Mont Royal. The bed was exceptionally comfortable. The rainshower in the bathroom was fabulous. And as always, the Lanvin toiletries and the take-home slippers are just nice touches. Turn-down service (tip, tip, tip!!) was also excellent--I'm pretty sure they even folded our clothing. Oh, and I should mention the room service. Room service was always quick (as opposed to our local pizza delivery here in NY, lol), and always plentiful. I feel like at most hotels here in the US, room service is always woefully overcharging for small servings of lukewarm food. Not so here. Yes, room service comes at a premium cost, but your eggs benedict is far more than just eggs benedict. First, servings are generous. Second, not on the menu description, we also received sauteed potatoes, a lovely fresh fruit cup, a shot of guava juice, and a basket of fresh croissants. I don't think I've ever had a better room service experience. Oh, and everything was hot! And one morning, we had a Do Not Disturb sign on our door, and someone actually called us with our food...on the phone...asking if we could open the door because the sign was up. I should also mention that we had an exceptionally difficult time staying connected to the complimentary Internet. And so they had a service guy help us, and eventually bring us our own router, just to make it work.
So, I suppose, what Sofitel lacks in space, they more than make up for in service. For that, I would be more than happy to stay here again.
