I like Oyshi. It's reasonably priced (especially given its prime location in the Harbourfront area bordering the Financial District), the selection is fair, the ambiance is cozy, and the service is just fine. I came with a friend for dinner last Friday at 7:30pm. There was a brief wait (~5 mins) but we didn't mind as it gave us an opportunity to explore the menu. It was packed - except for 1-2 seats at the sushi bar in the front, everything was taken and a line had formed! I find that to always be a good sign that a restaurant has a strong and loyal customer base.
Anyways, on to the most important matters - the food! We ordered the tempura, spicy salmon roll and the salmon chirashi.
Tempura: Great! Good portion. The shrimp were delicious - so crispy! There was something in here that tasted different (a bell pepper?) but nothing disappointed. Good start.
Spicy salmon: The filling:rice ratio was definitely favourable. These were pretty good, but were a bit colder than I'm used to. On second thought I may have wanted to opt for a hot maki option - shrimp tempura roll, maybe? They have many. What I wish they had were maki platters to share - it surprised me that the menu didn't seem to have these as I've found it to be a staple in other restaurants regardless of location.
Salmon chirashi: My friend ordered this and seemed to think it was great. I had a bit and it was just as I would expect - fresh and nicely balanced with a heaping white rice.
Service: A-OK
Overall - I'd like to make more creative choices in selection before I can make a solid conclusion. Everything I had was just fine, but I've heard wonderful things about Oyshi and need to see what is hidden in the menu that has made this place a go-to for so many of my colleagues!
