| - Unbelievably delicious food at very good prices. I can't even remember the last time I was able to get a great, filling meal for $6-7 and here, you truly can. The pho is a consensus Phoenix favorite and has gotten many good reviews from the Phoenix New Times and Yelpers alike, and for good reason. Pho places are really trendy right now, and popping up all over the place, but this one has been here forever and been making top notch pho the whole time.
If you typically get your pho from more anglicized places like Rice Paper and unPhogettable, try Da Vang. If you're used to having to use the usual pho fixings (sriracha, hoisin, jalapenos, etc.) to get flavorful broth, TRY DA VANG. The broth is extremely flavorful on its own, and in my view, really doesn't need any modification (though the usual fixings are provided). The Bahn Mi and spring rolls are also very tasty, even if not the best I've ever had. Solid Vietnamese coffee.
Now for the bad: service could be better. It may also depend on when you eat there, but I've been there several times where they didn't really check up on us, took a very long time to take our orders, or brought out our dishes at completely different times (not too fun for my friend, who had to watch me eat for 15 minutes before her food reached the table). Oddly enough, I found this was more true when the place was less busy for whatever reason. Also, if you or anyone in your party is vegetarian, you'll probably want to go somewhere else. Da Vang has a gigantic, hulking behemoth of a menu which has a grand total of 2 vegetarian items on it, and both are stir fry style dishes (no vegetarian pho). My friend found this out the hard way.
While we're on the topic of the menu, it's a little overwhelming and really could use some paring down. Years ago, having a huge menu may have appealed to people, but when you make certain items extremely well (see above), I think you're better off consolidating a bit and focusing on them. Personally, I almost always get pho, bahn mi, or spring rolls, and those seem to be the consensus strongest options.
Finally, yes, this place is dingy and perhaps somewhat sketchy-looking. The decor could use an update. None of that bothers me even slightly, but if you think it'd bother you, you may want to go somewhere else. Personally, I'll sit at tacky booths all day long if it keeps the pho under $6.
