  • My parents, whom are both in their 80's had gone without A/C for three days in 100+ degree weather while we waited for their home owners warranty to schedule a time to get someone out to the house to inspect the issue. We found that they couldn't get out for another 2 days so I, the son, decided to call out this company One Hour A/C to do an inspection since they could come within 3 hours and diagnose the issue. My thought process was since it was so hot out and they need to wait 2 additional days for the warranty company to send someone out to look at the unit I would just go ahead and call 1-hour to see if it was a quick fix and myself and the other siblings would just split the costs if they were a few hundred bucks or so. I didn't want my older parents suffering if it was a simple stupid fix. I would've felt terrible knowing they suffered for almost 5 days when a few bucks would've repaired it. So 1-hour tech shows up. He was very nice and pleasant. After his inspection he rattled off all kinds of lingo I didn't quite understand but it seemed like he knew what he was talking about. He started rattling off numbers that were unbelievable. He stated it would be $3200 to make the unit operate and couldn't guarantee that since the part that needed replacing has failed and it may have caused damage to other components that could lead to a $6000+ price if the compressor was hurt. He then stated since the unit was 14 years old it would be in our best interest to take advantage of their current summer special and replace the unit for roughly $9000+ dollars. After all of us basically had a heart attack, we informed the tech of our situation with the home warranty and told him we would need to elect not to do the repairs and suffer another day or two until the warranty company could make the repairs. My parents were so upset thinking they may be forced to take that route and cough up the money and do it. The warranty company uses 3rd party companies to come out to the house. My parents were absolutely shocked by what happened next. The repairman came in and was also very polite. He was on the roof for only a few minutes before telling us to hold tight while he further inspected it. After roughly 20 minutes the repairman stated that the fan motor had ceased and the motor was getting to hot and would shut down causing the warm a/c. He had to go get the replacement part but they were back up and running that same day. Now we have ice-cold air and it has been 12 days now. We are very upset with 1-Hour and their tactics to try and sell my 80-year-old parents a $9,000 unit, which they were thinking, may have to happen. Needless to say, all us kids were sick over this issue all week. We have all since talked and are blown away by the outcome. Very upsetting, yet relieved of the simple repair!
