I receive care in the Ahwatukee office. After much apprehension I agreed to an IUD for pain related to complicated menstruals/ ovarian cyst. The doctor said I would experience cramping. I exhibited immediate side effects consisting of abdominal pain, nausea, dry heeves, sweating, extreme fatigue and tingling in my fingers. The symptoms progressed as a walked to my car. I called the office to assist me back into the office. The receptionist said "no one can come to the parking lot, can you make it back into the office." After many moments of helplessness, dental office staff saw me struggling and helped me back into Southwest Contemporary. Major quality of care issues that are not consistent with best practice.
1. Someone from the office should have immediately helped
2. Research suggests minimal side effects from an IUD however, why didn't staff recommend observing me for 15 to 30mins before letting me leave
3. Why don't they have motrin or Compazine in office for basic symptom management (if needed). Both are cheap medications. Or how about recommending or prescribing these medications before insertion or for follow-up care (based on a thorough assessment)
4. No one offered to call my family/ emergency contact to discuss the above or offer recommendations for symptom management/ post care
5. They called the paramedics, now I get to pay God knows what for a blood pressure check and a blood draw. I was experiencing side effects from a IUD you inserted. Having the basic materials listed above would have helped. You have a blood pressure cuff!
6. Having access to a triage nurse is great however, birth control and pain management are best practice interventions for ovarian cysts. Not always recommending an ER visit. Given the opioid crisis, if the patient is not a risk concern it is within standard practice to prescribe a 7 day pain management prescriptions until the patient can follow-up with their provider!
A horrible experience!
