| - Springs Preserve is such a cool place, and a great spot if you want to experience and learn more about the Mojave without trekking too far out of town.
Admission prices may seem steep at first at nearly $20 a non-NV residing adult (townies, otoh, get a reduced rate); however, that admission gets you access to the botanical gardens, the Nevada State Museum, and the Origen Museum. So really, when you think about it, it's quite a bargain!
My Mimi and I came here on a cold (yes, it gets cold!) late December day, just after Christmas which meant there was not a huge crowd. We strolled through the gardens and enjoyed seeing the various succulents and plants that grow here in the desert. there was so much detail and effort into the gardens--windmills, a shed shaped like a large tin-can, cacti clearly cared for, etc.
When we needed a break from the cold, we went to both museums and learned a lot about Nevada history and desert geology. My favorite was the Nevada State Museum, which takes you through Nevada's history in a very succinct yet perfectly detailed and well-executed exhibit.
It's definitely a great place to take the kids as there's plenty of kid activities to do, but adults can easily have just as much fun here, even if it's not the casino tables and bars the adults come to Vegas for.
