| - A western bakery in the heart of East Chinatown could be seen as either a bold move, because there isn't another store like it, or it could be seen as a foolish move, because it has to compete with at least five other Chinese bakeries in the area.
Went in near closing time, wanting to try out the cheddar chive scone. Unfortunately, there was only a single scone left, a chocolate chip walnut. It was exposed, but I bought it anyway. At almost $3, expectations are tremendous. For that amount of money you can get four buns or tarts at the nearby Chinese bakeries.
The scone was much too salty for me, and this is coming from someone who enjoys salty, spicy ramen on a regular basis. Sprinkled salt was visible on the top of the scone, so I ended up slicing that part off and eating the rest. It was also very dry because it had been exposed to the air in the bakery all day.
In the end, the scone was very disappointing. You could say that it's my fault for buying an old scone near the end of the day. However, if the store knew that their scones had a short shelf life, they shouldn't have sold one to me in the first place. I ate a Chinese bakery bun immediately afterwards to get rid of the saltiness in my mouth.
I'll give this place another chance in the future, preferably an hour or so after opening time so I can taste their goods at their finest.
