| - At $7 a pop, their iconic cotton-candy-topped soft serve was decent, but underwhelming. Unfortunately, it's just not a very well-composed dessert.
I got the cotton candy (flavour of the day was grape) with green tea and Tiffany vanilla swirl ice cream. The problem is that while they're paired together, it's really two separate things. You can get to the ice cream without eating almost all the cotton candy and by then, your ice cream is somewhat melted, which wasn't an issue for me, but just by definition, it's "soft serve", not "melted serve".
The ice cream itself was average, borderline mediocre. Tiffany vanilla, which I assume is named after its blue colour, had a strange taste that I couldn't put my finger on. The green tea was similarly vague; you taste the slightest bitterness of green tea and the rest of the flavour never makes an appearance. I would work on developing the soft serve flavours more, keeping in mind that the sweetness from the cotton candy will affect the sweetness of the soft serve. The cheddar and caramel popcorn at the bottom felt out of place (at least the cheddar did!)
My friend got the affogato, which contains hot coffee, so by the time he finished the cotton candy, his ice cream became a beverage. While affogatos are halfway between a drink and a solid dessert, it wasn't exactly what he was expecting and he gave it a 1 out of 5.
While it's interesting and Markham is all about gimmicky desserts, I think Dolce 21 would benefit from putting a little more thought into the eating experience. Cotton candy on ice cream is unique, but does it make sense?
