Like all contemporary art museums of this size with no real regular collection, it is hit or miss based on the current collection exhibited. Luckily, most are hits.
I have throughly enjoyed several art exhibits here over the years. It makes for a great addition to the Thursday Scottsdale Art Walk (free entry on Thursdays)
Currently there is an exhibit showcasing Paolo Soleri. He was a famous architect and longtime resident of Paradise Valley. I would recommend, after to going to SMoCA, a free tour of Cosanti (his home and studio in nearby Paradise Valley) and a walk across his last project, a bridge on the Scottsdale Waterfront.
There is also an interesting gift shop here. A great place for finding unique gifts for that art loving friend
