  • I don't usually write reviews online, but I couldn't help but write one for this place. One of my favorite things to do when traveling is visit the local music stores, mainly ones that have used vinyl. I love flipping through bins, never knowing what you'll find next, maybe finding that record you've been looking for. I decided to swing by Wax Trax, even after reading all the negative reviews on Google, Yelp, Las Vegas Insider Pages, etc. I figured it couldn't really be that bad. Well, to jump straight to the point, it was just as bad as all the reviews have said it is. As many have mentioned, as soon as I walked in the door, the owner informed me that his records were expensive (twice actually). I'm not sure what the point of that is aside from trying to scare people away or making the point that he doesn't really want to sell his records. It was also clear that he didn't like people just browsing, that I needed to be looking for something in particular. While there are always artists I look for at a record shop, I like to browse and see what I find. I threw a couple of names out there, and he said that's the rock room, and the lights were still on there. Given that I showed up about an hour before they closed, I would hope that would be the case. The basement section was already closed off when I arrived. So I went up to the rock room and started looking around. The one positive thing I can say about this store is that the inventory is second to none. But there's a reason, for instance, that he has seven different copies of every Black Sabbath album; his insanely high prices. As others have mentioned, there are no price tags on anything. It really gives you the impression that he is running a museum and not a record store, as it feels like he doesn't actually want to sell anything. Since it was almost closing time, I left and decided to come by the next day so I could browse the soundtrack section. I did some research on some of the titles I had seen that I knew I wanted to buy, checking eBay and Discogs for recent sales, and I took note of the highest sales. I went back the next day and spent about two hours, finding some great records. When I brought my stack to the counter for him to price, I got the comments like "Oh, this one is an import", and "this one is expensive". When he was ready, I had this small hope that his prices wouldn't be that high, but I was wrong. I'm pretty sure he found the highest price he could find online for these records (listings, not actual sales), and then added 20%. If these had been in Near Mint condition, then I would have maybe seen the justification for some of the prices, but most were solid VG+, which is average condition for average prices in most places. He gave me a price for the whole stack, which I thought was a little weird. When I asked for individual prices, he started giving me very high prices. At that point, I took another look through the stack, set them on the counter and walked out without buying anything. I'd rather find them online for less or wait until I find them in a real record store. I have no problem spending $50 or more on a record if that's what it's worth. I'm not expecting to get the lowest price out there, but I won't pay $40 for a $20 record. Bottom line, just avoid this store. You'll find lots of great releases that you want to buy, and then you'll leave disappointed because the owner wants unrealistically high prices. If you can't resist, then do your research beforehand or while you're there so you don't over pay.
