  • As someone who just moved to a new neighborhood in the 'Burgh, I can definitely testify to the usefulness of IKEA. I was able to get many of the immediate essentials for my new place for under $300 - yay! The joy of IKEA isn't just its pricing: it's the assortment of stuff you can pick up for your place here. In the last couple of months I've bought a desk, desk chair, dresser, bed and mattress, organizers for my smaller items in my dresser, a lap rest for my computer, and even food containers. The last couple items in particular surprised me as I tend to peg IKEA as the place to go for big, bulky pieces of furniture. Which they are, but the amount of smaller things here that will help you get your apartment or home in order is also pretty impressive. On top of being a practical place to shop, walking through the place and wandering from bedding to kitchen ware to work spaces and beyond is a lot of fun; exploring all the different furniture and decorating styles always tends to inspire me and put in a decorating kind of mood. Although once you exit the display section and have to go digging for items in the warehouse the charm of IKEA begins to wear off. Fun's over - the real work has begun! I will forever have one nitpick about IKEA though, and that's the terrible instructions that come with your purchases. I understand that not printing the words helps them as they sell products across the globe, but, guys...you can put together a symbolic labeling system that clearly tells your customers which pieces are which. Hearts, stars, SOMETHING that will eliminate the problem I ran into where poorly drawn illustrations literally halted my construction process for several days until I could figure out that two identical drawings were not the same piece of wood in my desk. Oh, well. The directions will be a pain in my butt for a long time to come - but at least visiting the store is fun, and hey, I did get everything I purchased assembled with relatively little fuss. We love you, IKEA. We just need to work on our communication skills a little bit before I can give you the 5 star rating I want you to deserve. Maybe one day!
