| - Well, this would be a four-star review, except....
So, you saw the picture of my wheel from the first tire replacement. I bought two new tires. Everything was fine up to today. I needed two new tires...
Discount is pretty much the only convenient place to get the tires I like, Cooper Discoverer. So, I made an online appointment and headed on down this morning. I got in and out relatively quickly, except that when I started to pull out, there was a significantly noticeable "clunk" coming from the right front. This wasn't there when I pulled in, so I immediately stopped and called the service manager to look at it. They pulled the wheel, and lo, guess what they found? The ding from before. I thought it was odd when I saw the tire person hit the inside of the wheel with a grinder, but I let it go. Apparently, she was grinding down this bump and did not grind it down enough, such that it was catching on the brake caliper and scraping with each rotation. NOT good. NOT good at all.
Why did I drop the star, when I already knew about the ding and it wasn't their fault, you ask? I knew about the ding, yes. I also had it looked at previously by this same shop who told me it would be fine and not to worry about it. Apparently, that wasn't quite true. It is my expectation as a consumer that I am dependent on the advice of what I consider to be the professional/expert here. I'm certainly no professional tire person. If they would have said, no, you gotta replace this, the first time, I would not be happy but I would have done it regardless. They didn't say that. In fact, they said it would be fine as is. This time, If they would have put the tire/wheel on the hub and rotated it, they should have encountered the "clunk" and investigated it, finding the problem and advising me that the wheel must be replaced now.
I feel fortunate that this did not destroy the brake caliper on my hub. I had them put the spare on and I drove it home. I found an OEM replacement rim online for half the price that they found.
Don't get me wrong, I certainly don't blame them for the wheel damage. I blame them for giving me what I consider bad advice when they originally replaced the tire and noticed the damage. I blame them for grinding down the bump and putting the wheel back on - possibly aggravating a potential safety hazard even more. I blame them for not noticing the "clunk" before returning my truck to me. I have been a long-time customer of Discount with several thousands of dollars in tires purchased over a variety of vehicles for my entire family. Now I am wondering if it is really worth the convenience to buy from Discount. Maybe I should look elsewhere next time.
Edit - minus another star. I just noticed that three of the chrome valve caps are missing and they replaced them with random plastic caps. Seriously? Oh, and I found another tire store with Cooper tires. Buh-bye Discount!
