| - Been here twice and I'll be here again! Need I say more? Well ok...
So you need to book your tour in advance, but it's rarely super crowded. The location is a bit in the middle of nowhere, but hey that's because they own all the farmland around to produce their food products. But once you get there, there is a small cafeteria in the Herr's Factory, never ate there actually, and why bother, because you'll soon be gorging yourself on wonderful potato chips!
The tour starts off with a video in their theater which is pretty darn big, they can handle pretty large groups there, both times I went, there were about 15-20 people or so. The tour guides are VERY knowledgeable and hey a perk of their job is obviously eating a ton of potato chips, so as you might expect they are happy and love their job. They can taste the different types of potato that they switch between depending on the season. You see the pretzel production, popcorn, and of course the potato chips. And then you get to TASTE some! Straight off the assembly line, which means it JUST came off the deep fryer and it's STILL WARM! It's hard to go back to normal potato chips when you've had them so fresh.
As you finish the tour, you probably picked up a ton of random facts about making potato chips, but they end it by giving you a couple of free bags of chips! In the gift shop itself, they sell the "oops" chips, basically off weight bags, over or under seasoned, mis printed bags, or something minor (totally still edible), and they sell it at a huge discount! Course they also have pretty much EVERY flavour of their other chips too, including some that might be hard for you to find in stores.
Now coming from California, you can't get these chips there. My brother and I grew up on Herr's when we were born in NJ. A few years ago when we first came back to the east coast on vacation (maybe 12 years after we moved to CA), we were road tripping and found some Herrs, and bought another bag of Sour Cream and Onion (our favorite). My roommates who were on the trip with me, were basically like "we have Tons of chips why are we buying more?" But my brother and I were just like, you guys can eat everything else, we JUST want these. Later that night in the hotel, my roommate came and tried our bag of Herrs, walked back to his bed, picked up the other chips and just tossed it in the trash and said "We're only eating these from now on"! So after stuffing ourselves silly with Herrs and Dunkin Donuts (we don't have that either in CA) I came back to California, visited the Herr's website, found this factory tour and promised myself I'd go the next time I went to the east coast, and I've been there both times I've visited since. I also discovered you could just buy a box of chips, which is exactly what I did, but shipping made the price a bit high, so sadly I don't think I'll be doing that again.
Long story short, we walked out of there with 2 suitcases worth of chips. Good times!
