  • As a 21 year old visiting Montreal with friends, this was my first time booking a hotel on my own. I agonized forever about an inexpensive place to stay for three nights and I am very glad I chose Abri du Voyageur. Rooms and Amenities: Budget rooms were fairly spacious, old but quite clean and artsy. There is free wifi, although like with many hotels it could be somewhat slow. Each floor has two shared single-occupancy bathrooms with a toilet, sink, and shower. Surprisingly they were always clean and I almost never had to wait to use them. The lobby contains an ATM, coffee/espresso machine (cheap, but not free), and a computer. There is an also a breakfast room, although I personally never tried it since I never woke up early enough (hey, I'm a college student). My friend went there one morning and paid $8.00 for a basic meal, which she said was decent enough. Staff: Amazingly courteous and accommodating. I initially booked two non-refundable rooms for six people, but later found out that we would only have five. However, they kindly agreed to refund the cost of the extra person, which saved the group $50. Every request I made was fulfilled, and we also really enjoyed the places where one staff member suggested we go to eat. The cleaning people were above and beyond...even arranging our messy clothes and organizing our strewn about belongings. Location: Very central to many of the bars, clubs, and restaurants located on or near St Catherines, St Laurent, and St Denis. Old Montreal is a stone's throw away and Chinatown is extremely close as well. We only bothered to get a cab twice, and this was in freezing January. I would recommend parking at the Grande Bibliothèque, which is only about a ten minute walk away. It is indoors and only $12 for 24 hrs or $9 for 24 hrs on the weekends, and you can pay for all days in advance. Other: Overall I would highly recommend to students or anyone traveling on a budget. Like others have said, there is no elevator, so people with physical disabilities should probably stay elsewhere.
