| - After realizing that myself and the rest of my flight crew were going to have 20+ hours in Toronto and that the weather was not going to be very agreeable, we decided there was only one thing to do. Drink.
We stayed at the Toronto Hilton and Fionn MacCool's is just a short walk through an indoor walkway from the hotel. It's a bar at the base of a office building, so no surprise when we got there (on a Wednesday night) business folks were out in full force for happy hour. There was some cheers'ing for promotions and whatnot, everyone seemed to be enjoying the after work hours. We found seats at the bar which happened to give us prime views for people watching around us and for that of the bartenders to make sure we never went without a drink.
After enough Keith's IPA's, Strongbow's and Stella's, it was time for some food. We started with the Calamari, which to no ones surprise was chewy and a little overcooked. However, a few drinks deep and it tastes like paradise. I ordered the Fish and Chips which was great. The past few times I've ordered this meal at other places, I've been served tilapia or some other unknown whitefish, so it was nice to have haddock for once. Even through the haze of my drinking I could tell it was good. One of my colleagues had the curry and he seemed to put it down with no problem.
The company was good and the atmosphere, lively. There was live music, which albeit was a little TOO loud (we couldn't hear ourselves speak to each other at the bar), it kept the mood light. After making friends with some of the staff, the next logical step was to have some car bombs. Someone produced the weirdest looking car bomb dropping contraption I have ever seen. I decided to drop my own shot into the glass myself. I'm a big girl and I can handle it.
Not only did my pilots and I enjoy the drink (and drink most of it away), but we chatted up travelers like ourselves from all over -- even someone from my neighborhood in Philadelphia. The souvenir glass that I was given only pushes me more to recommend this place for people not familiar with Toronto and only staying for a night.
Fionn MacCool's is a typical chain Irish gastropub, except I appreciate how friendly the staff were, all of the staff not just the bartenders. To anyone staying at the Hilton without much time to venture out, this is a place thats close enough to where you can stumble back to your hotel room without the cost of paying the prices of a hotel bar.
