  • I went here to just look at the dogs after I had just lost my dog. My arms felt so empty. I kept coming back to this little tiny dog. She looked sick, she gave me a look like, take me home or just stop waking me up. I held her and she was limp, she weighed only 5 pounds, she had kennel cough and was in respiratory distress. I adopted her anyway, because, I didn't think I could be any sadder after losing my dog. She just loved to be held. She was so good. I put her in the playpen and she didn't make a sound, just curled up and slept. I gave her the meds, and wet food which she would not eat. So I gave her the dry food from the shelter. They give you a big bag of food. She ate a piece hungrily but when she saw my arms were empty, she stopped eating and wanted to be held. Anyway, she remained really ill for three days and then she got better and has been fine ever since. She is tiny, but, she can kill a pigeon. I think this is how she survived on the street. Anyway, she is a wonderful dog. A little overconfident, she likes to chase the larger dogs at the dog park while barking at them. She is a great watch dog,she barks at everything that gets near the house. The pigeons leave when they see her and she is always watching. Her name is Angel, I guessed what it was and she came running. She is my Angel. I am still not sure what breed she is, but she might be a Morkie. A month or two later, I decided she needed a sibling so she would never be alone. So I went and adopted another dog who must have been a show dog. She is very smart, she looks like a Maltese, but she is bigger, around 15#. Anyway, she is the most beautiful dog I have ever seen, she is only one or two, so a puppy. She has the most beautiful white hair that falls almost to her feet and it doesn't matt,so I only occasionally brush her and clip her nails and give her a bath with lots of conditioner, every two weeks. Having a puppy is work since she is an adolescent and tests the limits often. She is so happy though, it cheers us all up. I adopted a third dog and he is very cute too, he was very sick too and he is now healthy and strong. He is so cute He is a black poodle/papillion, so he has those ears, which are so cool. I think when you go here to adopt a dog, you have to look at it from the perspective of the shelter. They get hundreds of neglected and abused and abandoned animals. They take them in and neuter/spay them ,house them, feed them, provide vet care, immunizations and microchip them. $185 is a deal. I paid that for my first and second dog and the third dog I got on sale,he was only $4. They need the money. They have problems with their vent system. It allows the kennel cough to spread. All of mine had a little of it. It is really catchy, up to 14 weeks after , so you can imagine how hard it is to isolate for that. They would have to have a negative airflow room for each dog. I have tried to adopt a dog from other shelters and the application was like a college application with more essay questions. Then I never heard back from them! So the little two page thing they asked for was nothing and I think they were very accommodating, they take you in a little room and let you get to know the dog. They answer all the questions you have and I thought they were very nice. Plus the dog might have been brought in because of a behavoir and maybe they didn't fess up that they owned this dog and she just ate a couch. I see many people who do not know how to handle a dog in the park and dog park etc, I think there should be a mandatory class for people who adopt a dog to help them learn to take proper care of an animal who is as smart as your toddler. Cesar Milan is a great resource. National Geographic Wild has tons of shows with him that help you to be a better pet parent. One more thing, get pet insurance, for $30 a month, you can help your dog in an emergency and make sure he/she has the best care. I like Embrace the best. They cover the office visit and a percentage of the bill. Okay, I know this is long, but there are purebred dogs at the shelter and if you are going to buy one you might consider going there often until you see something you like. If you get a puppy, you have a year of immunizations and spaying/neutering and microchip and all of that. And a shelter dog is hearty, he survived living on the street and usually is a very nice dog who really wants to be part of your family, while you might have to tell a puppy something a million times, your shelter dog might get it immediately and want to please you. And, EVERYONE needs the unconditional love that a dog provides.
