  • When I first heard about the Zombie Apocalypse Store, I thought it was another one of Dave Eggers' 826 shops. But if it were, you wouldn't find such a wide array of weaponry, ammunition, and gory zombie footage playing in all the fake windows around the store. I'm sure the kids looking for creative writing tutoring would come up with several story ideas playing with their shooting gallery, though. Essentially it's an army surplus store with the survival gear and fabulous pointy things but WITHOUT all the racks of Dickies or orange hunting jackets (if you're looking for that, go to Bass Pro Shop), and goes so far as to have genuine bug out trucks for sale out front. Around the shop are different machines to pump a dollar into to either make an undead, animatronic dog stick its face out from behind a fence and bark or to incinerate a zombie as it walks by one of the "windows." They've got an entire collection of melee weapons with brass knuckle handles, with names like "Zombie Hammer," "TraumaHawk," "Brain Saw," and the "H.A.K. (Huge Axx Knife)." Perfect if you're out of ammo running around the wastes with NCR. Along with the dummy grenades, emergency rations, Twinkies (remember, rule #32: Enjoy the little things) and such they've got T-shirts, shot glasses, and stickers that read "Zombie Hunting Permit." They've also got copies of the "Zombie Survival Guide" and "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." With how much of the recorded groanings and gurglings of the "windows," you might wonder how the people who work there can stand the zombie overkill. It's a great store to visit. My group stopped by a couple times during our last trip. The folks there are nice and appreciate fans of the living dead genre. Apparently they have a "Shoot Real Zombies" activity. I'll have to look into it for next time.
