I've been in search of great Philly cheese steak for a while now. Unfortunately, the search continues. Steakenburger was on my list and had some pretty nice reviews. I decided to check it out recently. I ordered the regular Philly with cheese whiz and green onions and a large fry. My date ordered the steakenburger combo. We took the meal to go.
The fries were still tasty and fresh when we got home. They were very large cut. Larger then I prefer, however, they had a decent flavor. Some of the fries had spots on them. I think they would have been better peeled and cut smaller but that's just me. The cheese steak was HUGE. I mean massive. Lots and lots of steak. While the bread tasted fresh it was lacking flavor. I think if they toasted the bun it would have had a much better flavor. The meat also was lagging in flavor and a little dry. It was okay. Nothing out of this world and far from gross. I tried the burger and was also disappointed. The patties were thin discs and lacked flavor, juiciness, and seasoning. While there was lots of meat the quality of the burger was very average. After some of the five star reviews I had higher expectations. Everyone has their own opinion but I feel a five star meal should be exceptional. The wife said that she would have rather had a Lennys burger and could only eat about half of it. The other comment was that if you cant finish your meal then it says something about it.
I would try Steakenburger out again but at this point I don't feel I could recommend it. Unless someone was in the area and really craving a cheese steak. I feel Charlies Steakery is better than this place. I don't even think they are the greatest but for some reason they have been better than most places I've tried. And so the search continues...
