| - Friends rave about this establishment; we decided on a lark to go for a late lunch last week and wish we'd diverted to other eateries.
For starters, the wait staff was perhaps the most singularly unwelcoming crowd we have experienced in the city. Considering the upscale ambiance and the number of servers on hand versus the number of customers, waiting five or more minutes for someone to greet us and take a drink order is a little much. Furthermore, both of us also had, more than once, empty drink glasses for more than a few minutes during our meal. See previous comment.
We were situated near the kitchen, so I got the delightful view of our server chatting with another server while holding our drinks a few feet away from us. Our presence seemed at best to be an afterthought.
The food was acceptable but nothing exceptional; I have had far tastier meals for less money and better service at nearby Rooster's. The lobster in my lobster roll was bland, lacking the rich goodness that should make that sandwich so tasty, and the cole slaw was fundamentally sliced cabbage with mayo with a little sugar thrown in for good measure. Even the locally produced ice cream was scarcely discernible as peanut butter pie, its purported flavor.
My husband's french fries were good. That much we can say.
Overall, the restaurant reminded us of country club dining: overpriced mainstream and bland offerings amidst a homogeneous clientele. It was the Wonder Bread of upscale Charlotte dining, and in my many years of Charlotte living I can promise you better choices are literally down the block from Bricktop's.
