  • I guess I'm not getting all of the wonderful reviews. I thought Red 8 was really just "okay". I ate here on a Wednesday night after flying in, and it was a little bit late as well, so the place was pretty empty. It's very low energy, which might be good if that's what you're searching for. Our waiter was nice enough but not at all helpful - no suggestions, no explanation of the menu regarding sizes of the dishes or recommendations regarding whether we should share, etc. I live in South Central Texas, so although I love Asian food, I'm no expert at ordering it because other than disgusting, huge Chinese buffets, there are no Asian restaurants around here. I needed help knowing how big the dishes were to order properly, so I felt lost. I would have loved to have been more adventurous in my ordering and tried new things, but the menu is just lists of dishes and zero explanation about what's in them. We ended up with pork steamed buns, spring rolls, a bowl of Hot and Sour soup, and Kung Pao Chicken. The steamed buns - one of my favorite things - were disappointing. They weren't cooked properly, so they were gooey, not soft and delicious, and I found the round, ball-like presentation not what I was expecting since I've only ever had them shaped more like a taco. The spring rolls were fine (it's a spring roll). My mother had the Hot and Sour soup, and she's so extremely unable to tolerate spice that her eyes were watering, she was sniffling, and she couldn't finish a third of it. I had the Kung Pao Chicken, and conversely, I found it bland but decent. I really don't see any reason I'd go back to Red 8, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it.
