| - No kidding about this place needing negative stars. Don't do it.
In August, I went to SDG in Chandler to get 4 silver fillings replaced with white ones (see review of this experience at that site), two on the left, two on the right. Immediately after, I had pain on both sides that got increasingly worse. Got referral to this location to test the teeth to see if I needed root canal(s).
Now, to be fair, I have had two root canals at this same location 5 years prior, without any issues or pain, either during or after. An assistant tested one tooth on the right after taking xrays of both sides; yup, needed root canal. Pain on the left had subsided a bit, so they thought it would go away, and didn't test it. Had procedure done shortly after - took Halcion before hand, felt no pain during, got scrip for 10 days of penicillin. But after - wow. Called the endo's office 4 days after and asked if there should still be terrible pain; their response: you are probably a slow healer. Go back to your own dentist if pain still there after you finish the antibiotic. Went back to dentist (had appt for crown on that tooth) and said I was still in terrible pain (in tooth on right, and still on tooth on left). Took xray (and after letting me sit for an hour, unattended) noted that I had infection in empty canal, so gave me 2nd 10 day round of antibiotics.
After 10 days, STILL had horrible pain, so went directly to endo's office. This time, the assistant who took xrays and tested my teeth told me that the assistant who tested me last time was a "temp" and didn't read the xrays correctly, as she could see that I clearly needed root canal on the 2nd tooth on the right (directly behind the one I had root canal on) and one of the ones on the left! Then tested both with the "cold" pen - both teeth were so infected by then, I was crying - pain lasted on each one from the cold pen for over an hour - and furious that I had to endure all that pain for all that time - and for no good reason. At the very least, had I known the additional one on the right was contributing to my continued pain on the right side, I could have gotten that one done at the same time, and at least had one side pain-free (apparently it's more labor intensive to do root canals on opposite sides at the same time, due to having to deaden both of the bottom nerves). The endodontist wasn't available - I only saw the assistant - so I left the administrative staff have it (which they said they would pass along to the Dr., but would only say that they were sorry...which is not good enough. I was in such pain, I just wanted to get it over with (and in one appointment. had no desire to have to go back there twice) rather than start my search for new dentist/endodontist, and told the staff I would not be returning to SDG - and this experience was the tipping point for me. In hindsight - bad idea to tell them that before the procedure. By the way - never got one single follow up or inquiry whatsoever from the Dr. or the office.
So, day of the double root canal - 1 on each side - the attitude was markedly different than any other time. First, although I took Halcion again, I remarked to staff that I did not feel the same way I did before, and didn't feel relaxed and "out of it." Response - do you want to do it or reschedule? I went ahead - but was mostly awake and hearing everything going on around me. The friend who brought me in noted that staff seemed especially brusque and indifferent.
After they finished the right side root canal and moved to the left one - upon drilling, I felt the worst, horrific, searing pain, and jumped in the chair. Not sure if I got enough - or if I got a shot there at all, but that pain is forever burned into my memory. Afterwards, when I was brought out, my face swollen and tear-streaked, to my friend, and I told her how painful it was, the assistant interjected, well, you're the one who insisted on doing two root canals on opposite sides on the same day." WOW. Who says that?? I shot back, well, if your office had done their job correctly, and found the 2nd right side tooth needed a root canal, I would have had the two on the right done at the same time, and wouldn't have had to do root canals on opposite sides on the same day.
Promptly changed to a new dentist for the 3 crowns, and am extremely happy with the personal attention I never saw at SDG before - ever - and ensuring that my dental experiences are now without any unecessary pain. After being treated so poorly by SDG over the years, I guess I always expected the dentist's office to be an unpleasant, rushed, and painful experience. My switch to a new dentist proved that the way SDG treats their patients - well, me, anyway - is clearly the exception rather than the norm.
