  • Love to support the local stores, but sometimes they just can't compete with the bigger chains. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. Leslie's is a rip off. They overcharge for everything and always want to sell you something new. What is refreshing is Checker. I brought in my banged up Kreepy Krauley today. I flat out told the guy that if I need to buy a new one, I will, because the season is here and I want my pool to be vaccummed as best as possible. Many sales people would see that as a clear indicator to say "it would be best to buy a new one". But NO, he tells me that not only could he replace my cracked tube for $10, but also install it for only $7.50! (They are a pain to replace IMO). Next, he told me a pivotal part was missing, which he was right (the bumper). Lastly, I asked about how the wear was on the pad. It looked pretty worn to me. He could have EASILY sold me on a brand new one for $90. Folks, I put out all of the flags that i was willing to spend money. He advised me to save the cash and that I could get another year out of it! The moral of the story is this... I could have easily bought a new one from them for around $300. I could have bought a new pad for $90. instead, he got a perfectly fine used tube for me, installed it, and got me the new bumper I needed put on for $29. I WALKED OUT OF CHECKER with a functional, ready to go into the pool Kreepy Krauley for only $60. The money they didn't get for the upsells the "other" places would have gotten has turned into much more money long term, because what the got from me today was a customer for the long haul. As long as Check is in business, I will be there when I need anything for my pool. When everyone else in the business is sucking you dry for every little thing, it's nice to know that there is still an honest business to go to. What my guy who helped said after I thanked him for helping me was this: "Fair prices for fair people". That pretty much sums it up on it's own.
