| - Shadiness...
Stopped by to check out the facility on Dec. 21st, took a tour and asked for training rates... I was told they can't give personal training rates unless you are a member, so I signed up thinking they would be comparable to other gyms in the area (no contract luckily!).
I then sat down with Daniel, who told me they charge $x per 30 minute training session IF you sign up for 12 months of training at 2 sessions per week. That's $x/month for 12 months plus an enrollment fee (enrollment fee for training???)!!! Holy crap! That's an extra car payment! Why go through the time and effort to train, when you can spend that much on lipo or something! Daniel said that was the best rate they could offer. Period.
I said no way to training and pondered cancellation. In the meantime, he scheduled me for a free training session-fitness assessment (come with the membership) for Jan 9th because he had a busy schedule...
The day before my appointment, I got a call from Jeremy that I had to reschedule because the employee I was meeting with was no longer with the company... I said I was thinking about canceling the membership, and didn't need the session anyway because of the training rates. He said he's the fitness director, and that they have different rates and packages, and we could work something out. I was rescheduled for Jan 12th.
After the training session, Jeremy and I sat down to talk numbers. We found a package that worked for me... 2 sessions per week for 6 months pre-paid at $x/ea. He then 'discovered' corporate had changed their pricing at the 1st of the year, and the rates had gone up (how would he NOT know this if he's the director and manages all of the trainers???)... So suddenly turns out I'd have to buy 73 sessions pre-paid to get the same rate. And why didn't someone reach out or try to work something out before the first of the year when I signed up on the 21st?!
It was after hours and Jeremy asked me to give him a couple of days to see if he could get the rate he originally quoted me approved. I followed up tonight and he said he couldn't do it. I'm not surprised, but I am very disappointed, considering I've trained with Mountainside Fitness in Scottsdale and 24 Hour Fitness in Biltmore in the last 6 months, and I know what the rates are for training in this area. LA Fitness is trying to charge $10-15/half hour session more than either of those gyms.
To add insult to injury, on a side note... My company offers a corporate discount to LA Fitness memberships... Before my training appointment, I reached out to our corporate LA Fitness contact Dwayne, and asked him if there were any packages or benefits for training. He said he would research and get back to me, but after 3 weeks, I still have not had a response.
So I will be canceling my membership after all. It sucks because I'm out $60 (first and last month dues pre-paid), and I was really looking forward to going to this gym. It REALLY sucks that apparently, if the guy from corporate had called me back, or if anyone from the gym had followed up or mentioned that the rates were going to change, this wouldn't have happened.
Although it's a hassle to go through the cancellation process, ultimately I think shady pricing and bait & switch tactics are unacceptable, unethical, and borderline illegal. I will also be contacting my corporate procurement department and let them know that LA Fitness is not the sort of company we should associate with if they are going to engage in shady business practices.
