The Family and I have taken an interest in Vietnamese food. After a horrible first experience about 6 years ago we have decided to give it another try. The only other Vietnamese place we've eaten at, excluding the the place we didn't like and I can't remember, is Pho Avenia (which we like) and neither of us is well versed in Vietnamese cuisine so I can only review Saigon on my own standards of what I like and don't like.
What I don't like: Booths. I despise booths in any eating establishment. They are always too low and my food ends up at chest level. The backs are too far away and it makes my lower back hurt straining for support.
Sadly for me, The Wife and The Boy love booths. I have no idea why.
Saigon Kitchen has the best of both worlds. . .table booths! Kind of like the Spork of furniture only not as funny looking. Everyone in The Family was pleased all around!
The decor is nice (and new) and we were promptly seated at 6pm on a Friday night. Our server came over and took our drink orders and gave us a few minutes to look over the menu. My iced tea and The Boy's soda were brought to us promptly, but after about 10 minutes we flagged down our server and asked about The Wife's drink (some kind of fruity cocktail thing) Our server informed us the bar was a bit backed up but her drink was on it's way. Although our server was smiling while explaining, it seemed to me it was through clenched teeth and I definitely got the impression she was imagining my death by asphyxiation at her own hands in her head while explaining this to me. Not cool.
I suppose I can understand though. The place had filled up fast and the "20 something" hostess was sitting on her butt instead of helping out like she should have.
We ordered spring rolls for an appetizer. They arrived hot and crispy but they were just spring rolls. Nothing outstanding, mind you, but at least they weren't greasy.
The Wife had the lemongrass chicken which I tasted and thought was pretty good. Nice and tangy with large chunks of white meat chicken. The Boy had Shrimp Fried Rice and I had the #1 Combination called "Com Dac Blet" which was basically Pork, more pork and some shrimp. I tasted The Wife's dish. Nice. I tasted The Boy's dish, not bad. Mine was outstanding. Lots of meat and plenty of shrimp. All tender and cooked to perfection.
I've heard the phrase "I don't know art but I know what I like" well I don't know Vietnamese food, but I know what I like. I absolutely like what we had at Saigon Kitchen and will be going back soon to see what else I like.
