I used TFX International to transport my car from Toronto to the USA. After researching several options, I found a few good things about that this company:
a) had reasonable rates
b) good transport mechanism (because they transport vehicles in closed trailers using hydraulic lifts rather than ramp loads) and
c) most importantly, they offered to take care of the customs process/paperwork for importing my car from Canada into the USA
They also promptly picked up my car after carefully checking out the nicks/scratches and loaded it carefully into their trailer for transport. They also dropped off my car in front of my residence in the USA. After about three weeks, I received all the required customs paperwork in the mail and I used this paperwork to register my car in the USA and get new tags. Almost painless process except for a few things that made a great experience in dealing with TFX into a less than mediocre experience.
a) People never return voicemails or pick up the phones. Even when they do, they do not speak in a friendly tone. Very stoic...wtf? Surprised you are fellow Canadians. Where's the Canadian warmth?
b) Never gave me an exact bill amount before hand so that I could arrange for funds to prepay in Toronto before I left for the USA. This after repeatedly asking them.
c) Does not accept credit cards for payment. I understand this is a business decision for them, but its a huge pain for customers. Why? They only accept cash/certified checks, but don't tell you the exact amount beforehand, so very inconvenient. I had to scramble to get the payment in their hands in Toronto before delivery of my car because I was already in the USA.
d) I don't think they know the rules of cross-border transport off the top of their head. Or at least the person who was interacting with me did not. The CBP accepts a letter from the manufacturer certifying a car that is being imported meets US safety requirements. The customer rep who was handling my account caused me to panic when she concluded rather confidently over the phone that a letter would not be sufficient (I quote her - "I've handled several cases before and in my experience..."). She later retracted her statement after I contacted other people in the company. Please check your facts and do not mislead customers.
So I would have given them 4/5 but because of the above experiences, I'm forced to give them a 2.5/5. They get an extra -0.5 because Yelp does not allow 0.5 scores.
