  • Two buildings, one grand and stately, another shiny and new, both connected by an underground tunnel, facilitate a reading ethic readily displayed by its patrons. San Francisco's Main Library seems a mere Wi-Fi cafe, a glorified Panera in comparison; Chicago's Harold Washington Library, the largest public library in the world, a gray and murky dungeon, simply doesn't stack up. Highlights of Cleveland's comprehensive collection include an entire shelf devoted to obscure but influential "noir" novelist Cornell Woolrich, a philosophy section worthy of a major university, and computer technology stacks that have not had older, less commercially relevant works excised--they even have every Fabio book ever printed. It is not by coincidence that Cleveland Public Library is known as the true "CPL," as recognized by the domain cpl.org; Chicago's Public Library is relegated to chipublib.org status.
