  • If I ever win big on the blackjack table, Bauman Rare Books is most likely where you'll find me. It was a book nerd's dream to walk and admire first editions, signed editions, and other rare books. Some books you are even allowed to hold.... I looked through a 1st edition of The Shining that was 6k and boy, did I wish I had the money to burn. There are signs telling you to ask for staff assistance but basically they tell you how to properly pull a book off the shelf and how to hold it. Which is, if you're curious, you always pull a book off the shelf from the middle of the spine, *never* the top of the spine (ever wonder why library books are shelved close to the edge of the shelf? That would be why -- the closer the book is to your reach, the easier it is to pull it by mid-spine). As for holding the book, you need to support the weight of the spine with your hand, not holding it by the sides. So if you find yourself in Bauman's, impress them with this knowledge you've gleaned from this review! The staff were really friendly (and especially so when you already know how to handle a book, hint hint) and ready to answer any questions. Along with rare books to admire, there are also events held here regularly. I hope to return one day with the kind of money that affords me a book from Bauman.
