I've provided a list of alternate places to shop. So ... in addition to the online Hunt Club which seems a bit scam-y-licious ... the ethics of this place are rather unscrupulous and disingenuous. While touting the polished image of a hip Montréal Mile-End boutique with the wholesome and friendly patently Canadian schtick ... they are anything but. Frank & Oak is a nice concept but they could be doing it a lot better. Better as in ethically. While this company extols Montréal style and design and proclaims a staunch Montréal identity, the vast majority of the items sold here are, nevertheless, made in China. I asked Frank & Oak about the measures they undertook to ensure that their clothes were made under safe conditions and ethical labour standards that are on par with and beholden to Canadian regulatory framework. The Frank & Oak representative assured me that safe and ethical labour is on a list of important things somewhere and that the CEO visits the Chinese factories every year. I pressed on and asked if they had any evidence as proof as to how they can ensure these claims to be true. I also asked about how visiting Westerners (the CEO) could be confident that they weren't being taken on tour of a "bait and switch" factory as opposed to the actual facilities. He was unable to provide any evidence. He went on to inform me that they rely upon a third party contractor to ensure that labour standards are met. Go to m0851 for excellent quality and locally produced items. Go to Bon Vivant on Rachel East or La Montréalaise Atelier on Saint-Viateur.
