| - A poached egg. That is what was at the center of this lunch, literally and figuratively. I went into Zookz for two reasons. 1. It's near my work and 2. every morning I pass it and it has this huge banner outside that reads "Best Sandwich in Phoenix". I'm not sure which of their sandwich's are the best. Unfortunately their lead sandwich, the #11 is not the best sandwich in Phoenix.
The sandwich is a panni-esk meal with two "poached" eggs, bacon, tomato, cheddar cheese, cream cheese, and basil. When my sandwich arrived it looked like it was cooked in one of those sandwich makers someone gives you as a wedding gift. I opened it up to hoping to find two perfectly poached eggs bursting with yoke over some thick applewood smoked bacon and fresh tomatoes and basil. What I got were two incredibly hard boiled eggs, some bacon shavings, a very tart tomato along and some wilted basil.
The sandwich doesn't work. The problem is you can't poach an egg and then press it in a sandwichmaker and expect it to not come out overcooked.
Zookz gets two stars (Meh. I've experienced better) because the owner was terrific. She came out immediately and tried to explain to me that their egg cooker is set at five minutes (so its not really a poached egg) and that the eggs come that cooked. She said they would try to undercook the egg and hope that it worked with the press.
To their credit the second sandwich, though still over "poached" was better than the first. The owner was very kind and went as far as to reimburse me for my meal because it took about 20 minutes for me to finally eat. It was an underwhelming sandwich, great staff, but wrong concept. Overall it's kind of a hot mess, literally and figuratively.
