| - Absolutely do not deal with this company. I'm basically out nearly $1000. My advice to anyone here is to just go to BlueNile.
To preface - I generally support family-owned businesses whenever I can. I think it is so disheartening when you are in a place dominated by chain stores. So I sought out family owned jewelry stores when I needed a wedding band. In my usual fashion, I procrastinated and basically had two weeks to buy one.
I came here while I was in town for a business trip and had some time to spare. I picked a classic band and told the saleswoman Casey that I would think a day or so about engraving. So far so good. I live in an apartment in DC and we have been having issues with packages getting stolen and the mailman ignores our written notes regarding calling us to deliver any packages so we could come downstairs. I asked Casey to have the package delivered to my work.
Once my ring was engraved, she called to let me know that she's sending it out overnight, and it's insured. We verified the address (though not the building number). Wellll ... the package never showed up, but USPS tracking shows *someone* signed for it. The signature is not legible and the mailman didn't bother to note the name of the person. He just noted 'individual' in his records.
Anyway long story short - the ring is gone and the post office instructed me to file a claim. Okay. I contacted Barnes so I could get a copy of the mailer and proof of insurance. They sent a blurry image of just the USPS express mail mailer. I called back to ask for a better quality image of the mailer and proof of insurance. Casey told me that she didn't buy insurance with USPS; their business has insurance that covers everything. However, she said that their liability ends the minute the package is delivered.
She told me to take it up against the postal service. WTF. That's the whole point of purchasing insurance when you ship something. No one trusts the postal service and the point of insuring the shipment for the full value is that postal service's liability is limited to $100 without insurance. It doesn't do ME any good that they have insurance that covers *them*.. We went around in circles on this point. She put me in touch with the manager and who pretty much said the same thing. He did relent and said he would contact his insurance company, and he got back to me about how I need to file a police report. I submitted it... and there was zero response.
In the meantime, my civil wedding was coming up and I had to SCRAMBLE to buy another ring. I bought the same style ring (classic wedding band in comfort fit) at Blue Nile, for LESS THAN HALF THE PRICE. I received the ring next day, and there were no issues. They told me that if the ring is lost, they'll send me another one no problem.
Eventually, the ring was found. It showed up in a completely different building at my work (FYI - there are 6 buildings). I left a message for Barnes telling them I didn't want the ring. BTW, I'm attaching a picture of the rings. When you compare the two - you'll see that the Barnes ring is smaller and has a lot less gold (both rings are 14k) but their price is almost twice as much. They could have gained a loyal customer had they just sent me another ring and settled the issues later so I wouldn't have to be so stressed out and scrambled.
Lesson learned - this company sucks. Go to Blue Nile. You'll pay a lot less for a lot more.
