What the heck happened to this place? For years it was under complete renovation with the explanation that it was of utmost importance for Cleveland to impress the Republicans coming in last summer. Six months later and it hardly looks like much has changed.
This is still one of the only airports that has the TSA checked baggage operation right in the departures area. So rather than check your bag and have the airline employee throw it on to the belt behind the counter, you have have to walk it over to the x-ray machine yourself and leave it in a pile of luggage.
As part of the renovation they converted the B checkpoint to TSA pre-check only. This is objectively a good thing, but their execution sucks. There is no one checking boarding passes at the front of the line like at other airports, which leads to a lot of yelling and pissed off customers once they realize they stood around for nothing. Then the line is still slow anyway because they often only have one x-ray belt running.
I used to fly to and from CLE several times per year. Now I fly maybe once per year at most. United slashed its service, and Southwest jacked up their fares on routes that no longer have any competition from United. A bunch of bare-bones airlines like Spirit and Allegiant have moved in to fill some of the void, but anyone who has flown these guys knows it's hardly any consolation.
