We have been to Pittsburgh several times but hadn't made it to the National Aviary until this last trip and I'm so glad we went.
We went on a Sunday and were able find free street parking a reasonable walking distance away. We made the most of our trip and saw as many of the add on experiences as we could:
- Sloth talk - was great, the volunteer as well as the zookeeper who was handling the sloth were both very knowledgeable.
- Amazing Amazon ($5) - was well for the $5 we paid to see the show, it was educational and a great way to get to see the birds, sloth, and armadillo a little more closely.
- Penguin Feeding - The same volunteer who did the talk on for the sloth fed the penguins, it was a lot of fun to watch the penguins catch their food and the volunteer who was speaking while they were being fed was very knowledgeable.
- Bat Feeding - The zookeeper who came in to feed the bats a was great. She answered every question and provided a lot of information on the bats. She even let us know when she was going to hang up their food overnight so that we could come back and see them move around a little more.
The rain forest exhibit was closed for renovations while we were there but we were told where we could see those birds so I didn't feel like we missed out on much by not being able to go into the Rain Forest exhibit thought I would love to come back once it's complete.
We ate in the cafe and the food was tasty. My wife had pepperoni pizza and said it was delicious. I am a vegetarian and keep to a low sodium diet so I had limited option but the soup and salad I has was very good. My only complaint about everything all day was the portion size of the salad and soup for what I had paid.
Birds are not my thing, other than penguins I appreciate them but don't have a strong desire to get close to them but I really enjoyed my visit and my wife loved it.
I will gladly make a return visit to both support them as an organization and for my own enjoyment.
