  • I'd never been to a White Castle outside of Chicago. And, even then, it was only twice. Ok, and one of those times was when I was 10. But when I saw White Castle pop-up as an option on my Yelp iPhone app, I couldn't resist going. Sometimes you just get that craving. And White Castle was my first ever slider experience. There's just something about those tiny cheeseburgers. And, just perhaps, something about the fact that it was my grandfather (who was born and raised in Chicago) who first introduced me to the concept of sliders and White Castle. Plus, it's a building shaped like a little castle. And then there's that Harold and Kumar movie... I pulled into the parking lot and started to get a little nervous. It wasn't exactly the greatest looking area and mine was the only car around. I walked up to the main entrance only to discover that it was locked. Huh? It was barely 6:00pm. Were they actually closed already? As I was starting to back out and pull away, one of the employees came running out and waved me in. I was irritated enough to almost keep driving away. But again, sometimes you just get that craving. So I pulled back in and hurried on through the door. Apparently, the wind blows the doors into locked position (or so was the excuse offered by the winking teenage boy). I ordered a combo of 4 sliders, crinkle-cut fries, and a soda. A little bit disturbing to see the teenage boy go about preparing them. And when they were handed to me (after about 10 seconds in whatever you want to call whatever they put them in), I wanted to hand them back. But alas, I did no such thing. The meat was even more of a gray color than the ones you find in the frozen food aisle. And the cheese wasn't melted at all. And the fries were kinda ick. Ok, and I started to feel a little sick as I started in on slider #3. And then there was the only other customer to walk in, who totally gave me serial killer vibes, that stopped to talk to me about the color of hair and my plans after I finished eating my sliders (no thanks, I don't need a ride, and I don't really want to see the puppies in the back of your unmarked, white van)... Overall, though, nostalgia will always get the best of me. No matter how bad the White Castle experience, those little cheeseburgers will always have a special little spot in my heart. I'm 10 years old, wearing a hot pink Hard Rock Cafe polo shirt, sitting in a White Castle somewhere on the Southside, with my grandfather next to me...
