| - The idea of the Toronto Christmas Market is a GREAT idea for Toronto, and the location (Distillery District) is the perfect venue to host it. I went for my very first time this weekend and was instantly taken aback by how even more beautiful the Distillery looked all lit up and decorated.
It's my understanding that this Christmas Market is modeled after those you would find in Vienna. Everything about it had a sort of Winter-Oktoberfest feel to it, from the Beer Gardens, to the Schnitzel and Bratwurst food stands to even the look and feel of the little food huts. I was impressed.
Fellas, you've known me to keep your dating lives in mind throughout my travels, and this is no different. If you're looking for a cute, hand holding, winter-y date that doesn't involve ice skating at City Hall, this is the place. Maybe it's the couple-y atmosphere of the Market, the Christmas music, or another factor, but just being there made my tiny little CM heart grow two whole sizes (yes, like the Grinch).
Now, albeit a romantic winter destination, it does come with a few warnings that have impacted its potential for a perfect rating, so if you're prepared for these factors it may improve your experience overall.
- Crowds: Lordy lordy, if you don't do well with bumper to bumper traffic I wouldn't recommend this for you. If you don't mind a little light jostling around then give it a whirl
- Line ups: This goes hand in hand with the above, but everything good had a line up, grilled cheese stand, alcohol vendors, schnitzel, good stores, washrooms, ATM, basically everything. We settled for a crummy Oktoberfest Sausage that wasn't cooked overly well, but did the trick in terms of some form of sustenance
- Cold: Gee-whiz, did I ever regret not bringing gloves. It's winter so dress appropriately because you are going to be stuck outside for a very long time unless you so happen to score a table at Mill Street Brew Pub or another restaurant. They have fire pits sporadically placed in key areas, and they are very well manned and kept roaring (a great spot to cuddle up with your someone special *WINK*)
- Parking: Don't even bother, it's nightmarish. Thankfully we parked and took the King Streetcar across, saved us time, money, frustration, etc. I'd recommend you do the same.
- CASH ONLY. Enough said, also the ATM's were super hard to find so come prepared because the prices for basic alcohol beverages were steep.
***Kris' Pro-tip to a fantastic night:***
Plan in advance and book a reservation at Mill Street or another restaurant in the distillery (let's say 8pm). Arrive about 90 minutes prior to your reservation and use that time to explore the market in all it's glory. At about the time of your reso you'll realize just how cold you are and you'll want to venture inside. Have dinner/lots of drinks in a resto and once done, venture outside and cuddle up by a fire for a bit before heading home :)
Definitely a good place to be, just plan ahead and be smart!
