I finally made my first trip to SMoCA last night, getting a walking tour through the upcoming contemporary Scandinavian art exhibit and the drawing collection - with each piece being explained to us by the artist. Several of the pieces, some not yet complete, still gave quite an impact. Now I know art is all about how the viewer perceives it, but getting into the artists' minds helped me gain a lot of insight to different ways of viewing and interpreting art moving forward. I thought it was cool that SMoCA sets up events like this.
For the limited amount of space, they had a lot of high caliber work and really thought provoking exhibits. I didn't know what to actually expect and I left definitely ready to come back again. What's most surprising to me is where it's located. I would have placed this museum somewhere near the Phoenix Art Museum near downtown Phoenix, not surrounded by Pepin, AZ88, and the Mondrian, but that just makes it another one of the Valley's surprises.
I'd definitely recommend a visit here to anyone.
