| - Visiting Phoenix, where I have lived over the years. I looked up a few restaurants and decided to take my son here for his birthday dinner. The atmosphere was pleasant, decent lighting etc, and there were very few people there-- which can make enjoying conversation more pleasant. Perfect for tonight, I thought.
Our waiter was attentive and offered drinks, but we passed. My son requested an appetizer that our waiter later informed us was not available. It was a disappointing start and I was hoping we did not make the wrong choice.
My son was ok with that and decided to ordered steak shoulder, which he was very happy with. It was dressed with mushrooms and a brown beef based gravy. The steak was prepared medium rare and my son had no complaints about that.
I thought about ordering an appetizer then decided I would just go with an entre. I had the shrimp scampi-- though the bruschetta looked very appealing. The scampi was done in a light tomato cream sauce, which I really liked. Additionally I requested the pasta al dente; it was not quite there, but I Love homemade pasta, and that with the fantastic sauce more than made up for it.
A lot of restaurants make the sauce too oily or often just too thick. Trattoria's recipe was just right. Their sauce held on to the pasta without smothering it. While the shrimp were a little skimpy, they were still flavorful and well prepared, past translucent but not tough.
I would not say it was quite a 4 but close. I don't understand running out of a product with so few customers.
