  • I used to love this place. I've been going there since they were located back in Northland Mall what must be well over a decade ago. I KEPT loving it dispite a new location that's cramped, stuffy, dusty, and hard to get around. I kept loving it dispite back issue drawers that are packed so tight it's impossible to see anything, and that everything comes out damaged. I kept loving it dispite a rather small selection, sparse numbers of issues, and honestly just about every stock and condition problem you could have.... and I loved it because of the staff. I used to plan my trips in to coincide with certain employees work schedules so we could chat about everything from movies to new issues of our favorite books, to travel destinations... and truly, I will miss them, but this place will not recieve another dime of my money, for how they've handled myself and my friend over the last few months. A friend of mine put in a special order for a book back in late February - early March, left them a deposit and everything. That same day, I signed up for a file, gave them a deposit of my own (which I was told would be refunded in store credit on my final purchase when I closed out the file). It's now the middle of June and to date, my friend has still not recieved his special ordered book, and is continually given the run around about it... but hey, I forgave that too. I was far too kind. The straw that broke the camels back was when I called today to check the policy on canceling my file, not out of spite or even an intention to stop shopping there, I just decided I was no longer interested in 2 of the 4 titles I had subscribed to, and you need to keep a minimum of 4 to run a file, so I was going to cancel it, keep picking up my other 2, and eventually open it back up when I found something new. However the woman on the phone, rather nonchalantly told me "You still need to come down and pay for anything we've set aside for you." to which I said "I can use the deposit refund for that, right?" and her response was "We keep deposits." After I did a double take, and had her repeat to make sure I hear right she clarified that these "deposits" are kept because opening a file comes with a small discount that "they don't charge for like a lot of others stores do for discount cards" .... so, they call it a deposit, promise to refund it, and then don't.... yet they DON'T consider this charging? When I stated, rather irritatedly, that the contract I signed specifically stated I would get it back, I was told that they "just changed that policy" to which I retorted that if they simply decide arbitrarily not to fulfill their end of the contract, I'm well within my rights to NOT come in and purchase the books they set aside, as they've violated the signed contract, I got a rather snippy remark and insinuated threats to use my credit card information to charge me - despite me never going in and buying the product. I cannot stress this enough - it's one thing if you just go in and see something you want, but this is TWICE now this store has taken "deposits" right in front of my eyes under false pretenses. DO NOT give them any money for anything you do not currently hold in your hands. They CAN NOT be trusted. ::::Update:::: Back when I opened my file, I was trying to catch up on two titles I hadn't read in over a year. The staff helped me find the issues they had in stock, and offered to keep a list on file for me of the issues I was missing, so that (and this wording is important) "they could notify me if any of the others came in, or if a second printing became available in case I wanted to order any of them." Sounds like great service, right? After the horror stoies listed above, I both called AND emailed the owner of the store to complain about how my friend and I were treated and to tell him I wouldn't be back. I have since recieved not one but two different phone calls, the first 3-4 months AFTER I closed my file and made these complaints, and the second a couple months after that, saying that they had ordered me some of these missing issues and needed me to come in and pay for them because "I asked them to order them and now they've lost money on the order". So... apparently, when you DO special order something and pay a deposit, they never order it, and when you just express an interest in knowing if they get something in the future, they order it and expect you to pay for it. Great staff. Subpar store. Piss-poor management.
