  • What the world needs now is love, sweet love...and cupcakes! Red Apron Bake Shop is doing its part to spread baked good joy by opening up a retail space. We stepped into the new shop early on a Friday afternoon last month. As we were eagerly tried to decide what goodies to get another customer hastily purchased all the Bundt Cakes that were on display. Was this a good sign of good things to come? Perhaps. We selected 4 cupcakes (Peach Cobbler, Blueberry Lemon, Strawberry Chocolate Chip, and White Chocolate Raspberry), 2 cookies (both Lemon Gooey Butter) and 1 fruit tart. The prices are reasonable. We paid $16.22 with tax for the all 7 items. Most of frostings on the cupcakes were wonderful! They had good flavor that was not overly sweet with a smooth and creamy texture. The cakes, however, were all over the place. Some were dense, some were airy, some were moist, and some were dry. Consistency is the key to success when baking and that could use some improvement. The Peach Cobbler cupcake has cinnamon frosting topped with a streusel crumble and filled with a peach compote. You'll want to buy more than one of this cupcake because you wiIl not want to share! It was my favorite cupcake of the ones we tried. On the bottom of the list for me, was the Strawberry Chocolate Chip. This cupcake felt like it didn't belong. The frosting tasted artificial and cake was dry. The Lemon Gooey Butter cookies were dangerously delicious! Both cookies barely survived the rest of the day before being devoured in fashion that would have made Cookie Monster proud. Lastly, the fruit tart was forgettable and I would forgo getting one on future visits. Being new, the bakery has a few things to work on, as mentioned above with the cake consistency. Also, I wish that the cupcake to-go container would be not be plastic. Cardboard boxes would be far more charming and match the feel of the shop better, in my opinion. "Never Skip Dessert. Ever." Words to live by, Red Apron's motto, and exactly the reason to grab some desserts from this local bake shop to enjoy today.
